Axis Engineering

Mining Automation & Systems Integration for Surface Mining

Smarter Systems.
Zero Downtime. One Partner.

Surface mining operations run on tight margins. When aging controls, fragmented vendors, and disconnected systems compound, every unplanned hour costs production. Axis Engineering delivers turnkey mining automation built for the demands your operation actually faces.

One Partner.
Every Discipline.

Most mining operations work with plenty of equipment vendors. What they lack is a single partner who sees across the mechanical, electrical, and controls boundaries.

Capability Typical Approach Axis Engineering
System Accountability Multiple vendors, fragmented scope Single source from concept through ongoing support
Discipline Integration Separate electrical, mechanical & controls contractors All three disciplines in-house, designed to work together
PLC Modernization Often requires full system replacement Legacy-to-modern migration without rip-and-replace
HMI Design Generic templates adapted for the site Operator-first interfaces designed for mining environments
Panel Fabrication Sourced from separate fabricators UL508A-certified in-house panel shop
Brownfield Installs Field guesswork, rework, and change orders High-accuracy laser scanning for first-time-right installs
Emergency Response Reactive dispatching with unpredictable timelines 24/7 guaranteed response, remote VPN + on-site dispatch
Documentation Outdated prints, tribal knowledge dependency Field-accurate schematics updated at every project milestone

Why Surface Mining Operations
Stall Out

Most mining facilities don't fail because of one big event. They erode from the inside out — three compounding problems that no single vendor is positioned to solve.

01

Aging Control Systems

Discontinued hardware, unavailable spare parts, and unsupported software create escalating risk every month you defer the upgrade. When legacy PLCs fail, the search for replacement parts can halt production for days.

02

Fragmented Vendor Relationships

When something fails, finger-pointing between electrical, mechanical, and controls contractors means no one sees the full picture. Identifying root cause requires coordinating multiple parties, each protecting their own scope.

03

Tribal Knowledge Risk

Maintenance teams rely on undocumented workarounds and experienced technicians who carry decades of system knowledge. When those people retire, the institutional memory walks out with them.

The Axis answer: Mechanical, electrical, and controls engineering under one roof — eliminating the coordination gaps that turn small problems into production stoppages. We design systems where every element works together from day one, with operational visibility built into the architecture, not added as an afterthought.

We've Done This
Before

The controls challenges in surface mining are not theoretical. We've helped operations modernize aging PLC systems, restore accurate documentation, and build automation architectures that give their teams visibility instead of guesswork.

Conveyor & Loading Controls Modernization: From Obsolete PLC-5 to Documented Modern Architecture

A surface mining operation was running aging Allen-Bradley PLC-5 controls across its primary conveyor and truck loading systems. The hardware was discontinued, spare parts were scarce, and the original documentation no longer matched the installed system. Axis Engineering replaced the obsolete PLC-5 platform with a modern ControlLogix architecture, built new operator HMI screens for real-time visibility, and delivered complete as-built documentation for every panel and circuit.

Discontinued PLC-5 replaced with supported ControlLogix platform
Operator HMI rebuilt for real-time status and fault visibility
Field-accurate as-built documentation delivered for all panels
